Nebbiolo (Chiavennasca) considered to be one of the most esteemed grape varieties, is suitable for very high quality wines with good ageing potential. It is a native variety of the Valtellina, where it is called Chiavennasca, and is the basic variety used in the production of DOCG Valtellina Superiore and Sforzato. It is grown extensively in Piedmont, in the Langhe and Roero areas in the province of Cuneo, as well as in the Upper Piedmont region. It is also present in the Asti province, although in much smaller quantities. Moreover, it is widespread in the lower Valle d’Aosta region and it is found also in Franciacorta. In northern Sardinia, in the area of the Commune of Luras, a fine Nebbiolo is produced. The grape variety produces top quality grapes with a good balance between colour, body, acidity, persistent and volatile aromas and alcoholic strength. The grape is therefore suitable for separate vinification or minimum amounts other varieties may be added to produce wines that are defined as full-bodied “noble” wines. The variety ages well, featuring persistent aromas and colours. Once they are fully mature, Nebbiolo-based wines have overtones of fruit, dried flowers and spices. On the palate the wines show fine-grained tannins.
